If you only use the factory settings on the Garmin Striker Vivid 7sv, you are wasting massive fishing potential. With these color palettes, gain values and frequencies you can make schools of forage fish and zander sticking to the bottom crystal clear.

No more muddy displays: This is how you get the absolute maximum out of your Garmin Vivid display.

The Garmin Striker Vivid 7sv is one of the undisputed bestsellers among echo sounders for predator anglers. 7-inch display, split-screen functionality, traditional CHIRP, ClearVü and SideVü offer unbeatable value for money. But disillusionment on the water often comes quickly: factory settings swallow fine fish sickles, the image noises or the bottom of the water looks like an indefinable pulp.

The reason for this is simple: default settings are programmed for the average, not for specific target fish such as zander on steep edges or perch in open water. With the right color palettes and filter tuning, you can make your sonar the sharpest tool on board.

1. The Vivid color palettes: which color for which purpose?

The Vivid series features 16 new high contrast color palettes. But not every color is suitable for every lighting situation:

  • Traditional CHIRP (2D): Choose Amber or Rust red in bright daylight. The classic blue palette swallows up subtle swim bladder echoes. Amber separates fish that are only 10 cm above the bottom from the dark bottom with a yellow-red sickle that is razor-sharp.
  • ClearVü (downscan): Set up copper (copper). Herb edges, sunken trees and stone packs appear almost three-dimensional. Clouds of forage fish stand out clearly from the bottom structure as fine points of light.
  • SideVü (side scan): Use Monochrome / Grayscale or Copper. Shadows (acoustic shadows) behind stones or edges are easiest to interpret in grayscale: light means hard echo (stone/gravel), deep black is the shadow behind them - that's exactly where robbers are lurking.
"Pro tip: Turn off the automatic sensitivity (gain)! Manually turn the gain to 80-85% until there is a very light layer of snow on the screen - then turn it back 2 to 3 percentage points. This is exactly how you get 100% sensitivity without noise chaos."

2. Detect color enhancement & soil hardness

A hard water bottom (gravel, mussel beds, sand) reflects sound waves much more strongly than soft sludge. Put the Color Gain to 55–60%:

  • Hard floor: Represented by a thick, intense yellow-red line with strong double echo.
  • Soft mud: Absorbs the sound and appears as a wider, darker signal without a significant second echo.

3. Frequency selection: 455 kHz vs. 800 kHz

The Striker Vivid's GT52HW-TM transmitter provides two main frequencies for ClearVü and SideVü:

  1. 455 kHz (Wider Cone / More Range): The ideal choice for SideVü when searching large areas of water (up to 35-40 m to each side of the boat).
  2. 800 kHz (High Resolution): Perfect for close ranges up to 15 meters and for ClearVü. Details such as individual branches or paving stones on sheet pile walls are resolved with razor sharpness.

Conclusion

A modern echo sounder doesn't catch fish on its own - but with optimally configured color and frequency settings you save yourself countless empty casts. Try the Amber and Copper palettes on your next trip and save striking seamounts directly with Quickdraw Contours.
